615 St Columban dies
622 Muhammed gets booted out of Mecca and flees to Medina where he becomes a political leader.  Then a military leader.
632 Death of Muhammad. Abu Bakr chosen as caliph. (Sunnis)  Shi’a Muslims believe the next rightful Calip was Mohammed’s cousin and son-in-law, Ali Ibn Abi Talib, who was married to Mohammed’s daughter Fatima.  In next hundred years, Muslims took over North Africa, Palestine
636d  St Isidore dies
649  Pope St Martin I(649) called synod of Bishops at the Lateran Palace

  • Byzantine Emperor, supported heresy, tried to have Martin killed at Mass
  • Had him arrested and take to Constantinople
  • Exiled died in Russa
650 Muslim forces conquer most of the Byzantine territories, formerly occupied by the Persians.
662d St Maximus of Constantinople
680 When Muawiyah I died in 680 AD, his son Yazid made himself the next Caliph, beheading Ali’s younger son, Hussein at the Battle of Karbala, marking the official split between the Shi’a and Sunni. The anniversary of Hussein’s death is called “Ashura.”
680-681 Third Council of Constantinople.  Put an end to Monothelitism by defining two wills in Christ, the Divine and the human, as two distinct principles of operation. It anathematized Sergius, Pyrrhus, Paul, Macarius, and all their followers.
687 Pepin of Heristal, a Merovingian ruler, unites the Frankish territories and builds the center of his kingdom in Belgium and other Rhine regions. He is succeeded by his son, Charles Martel, who forms an alliance with the Church which helps the Merovingian Dynasty (and Christianity) to expand into Germany. Pepin the Short succeeds his father, Charles Martel, and strengthens the alliance between Benedictine missionaries and Frankish expansion.
